| WAVES LIFELONG LEARNING SERIES Monthly opportunities to expand your education through online lectures and forums. Gary Haugen, International Justice Mission Gary Haugen, founder, president, and CEO of International Justice Mission (IJM), spoke at the School of Law Commencement on May 22, 2009. IJM is a human rights agency headquartered in Washington, D.C. Established in 1997, IJM works with national governments to secure rescue and restoration for victims of violent abuse, and to ensure that public justice systems work to protect the poor from slavery, sexual exploitation, and other violent forms of oppression. The Pepperdine School of Law was the first in the country to establish a student chapter of International Justice Mission. Three recent Pepperdine graduates have joined or will be joining IJM's staff in India, Jon Derby (JD '04) and Christina Sambor (JD '08) in Mumbai, and Melissa Dossey (JD '08) in Calcutta. | | NEWS School of Law Funds Public Interest Work for 51 Students Pepperdine University School of Law has given more than $122,000 to 51 students for national and international public interest work this summer. Thirty-three students will work Stateside and 18 students will travel abroad to work in Uganda, Rwanda, Thailand, and Belize. More... Kmiec Appointed Ambassador to Malta by President Obama Douglas W. Kmiec, Pepperdine's Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was appointed to be ambassador to the Republic of Malta by President Barack Obama on July 2. The nomination must first be confirmed by the Senate in September. Cupp Publishes "Moving Beyond Animal Rights" in San Diego Law Review Richard L. Cupp, John W. Wade Professor of Law, recently published the article Moving Beyond Animal Rights: A Legal/Contractualist Critique in the San Diego Law Review. Cupp, who is a longtime Animal Law scholar, frequently writes and lectures on the rising significance of Animal Law. Dean Starr Prevails in U.S. Supreme Court Case Horne v. Flores The United States Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of School of Law dean Kenneth Starr's clients in the case of Horne v. Flores. The case was initiated nearly two decades ago in 1992 and centered on the enforceability of a nine year-old injunction issued by a federal district judge in Arizona. More...
